Safety at BYLTup: How Our Long Beach Roofing Crews Work

BYLTup is a Long Beach roofing company. Our main office is at 20960 S Brant Ave in Long Beach, and roofing is the core of what we do, from residential roof replacement and repair to commercial roofing. From that same base we install solar and rain gutters, and we work across Los Angeles County, Orange County and the Coachella Valley.

Every one of those jobs runs on the same safety program, whether the crew on the roof is our own team or one of the subcontractor crews we work with. How a contractor handles safety tells you how it handles everything else, so here is ours.

Built on NRCA Resources and Cal/OSHA's Models

BYLTup is a member of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). Where NRCA publishes a resource, we use it. Our written safety programs are built on NRCA resources and Cal/OSHA's model programs for California employers, then fitted to the work our crews actually do. Credit for that foundation goes to NRCA and Cal/OSHA. Fitting it to our jobs is our work.

Our Written Safety Programs, in Plain English

California expects every employer to put its safety program in writing. BYLTup has four written safety programs, adopted and signed by our CEO. Here is what each one does.

Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)

The IIPP is the backbone. It names who is responsible for safety and sets out how we:

• find and fix hazards, including inspections before and during jobs
• look into injuries, illnesses and near misses to find the cause, not someone to blame
• train people when they're hired, when they take on new work, and when new hazards come up
• talk about safety with our crews

It also makes clear that anyone on our team can report a hazard without fear of reprisal.

Code of Safe Practices

The Code of Safe Practices is the set of written job-site rules everyone follows. It starts from Cal/OSHA's general construction code and is fitted to the work we actually do: roofing, gutters and fascia, solar-related roof work, and ladders. It covers things like keeping guards in place, reporting unsafe conditions right away, and treating walls, rails and gutters as off-limits for standing.

Heat Illness Prevention Plan

Southern California roofs get hot, and the Coachella Valley gets hotter. Our Heat Illness Prevention Plan covers outdoor work in heat: fresh water, shade and cool-down rests, extra steps on high-heat days, easing new crew members into hot conditions, and what to do fast if someone shows signs of heat illness. Crew leads and crew members are trained on it before working in the heat.

Hazard Communication Program and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Roofing uses real chemical products: primers, adhesives, sealants and coatings. Our Hazard Communication Program makes sure crews know what they're working with. We keep a list of the hazardous products we use and a safety data sheet (SDS) for each one, products are labeled, and crews are trained to read an SDS and use the protection it calls for.

What You'll See on a BYLTup Job Site

Fall Protection

Falls are the biggest risk in roofing, and our program is built around that. Fall protection is used on every BYLTup crew, including our subcontractor crews. Depending on the roof and the work, that means harnesses and anchors, guardrails, scaffolds, and the right ladder set up the right way.

Weekly Safety Meetings and Crew Training

Jose Navarro leads our weekly tailgate safety meetings, mainly in Spanish, the main language on our crews. Between meetings, crews train on the job with short talks matched to the work, such as ladders, fall protection, roof openings and skylights, heat and rooftop solar.

Our team has also trained hands-on with GAF's CARE (Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence) trainers, including a shingle installation session led by Leo Castro, CARE Training Manager at GAF.

CPR and First Aid Training, and a First-Aid Kit in Every Truck

BYLTup crews and production staff train in CPR and First Aid with Richard Retana of SafeCore Consulting. Our most recent company-wide class was in May 2025. Every BYLTup truck carries a first-aid kit, so trained people and supplies are close by on every job, from Long Beach to the Coachella Valley.

A Safety Notice Posted with the Permit

On every job that needs a permit, we post a BYLTup safety notice with the permit at the site. The notice has a QR code that takes crews and visitors to our full written safety plans.

Who Leads Safety in the Field

Jose Navarro is BYLTup's Production Manager and Safety Coordinator. He runs our safety programs day to day, leads the weekly safety meetings, and is the person our crews, our own and our subcontractor crews alike, go to with safety questions.

Why We Show You Our Safety Program

I'll be straight with you. Most homeowners never ask a roofer about safety, and most roofers never bring it up. We do, because how a company protects its own people tells you a lot about how it will treat your home or building. The same planning, follow-through and honesty go into the safety program and into your roof.

Our founders have been in construction together since 2007. We built BYLTup in Long Beach to do this work the right way, and that starts with every person on the roof getting home safe.
