Skylight Installation in Long Beach
Licensed Roofing Contractor for Residential & Commercial Skylights in Long Beach, CA
BYLTup installs skylights across a full range of roof systems for homeowners and commercial property owners throughout Long Beach and the surrounding Southern California communities. As a fully licensed, bonded, and insured roofing contractor, we handle everything from the initial roof opening to flashing, sealing, and integration with your existing roofing material.
What sets us apart is a capability most roofing contractors don’t have: we can remove and reinstall existing rooftop solar panels when a planned skylight opening falls near or beneath them. That means no second contractor, no scheduling gaps between trades, and no warranty complications from having someone else cut into your roof system.
Ready to add natural light to your home or building? Call BYLTup at (562) 414-4425 to schedule a skylight installation consultation.
Why Long Beach Homeowners Choose BYLTup for Skylights
We’re one of only a small handful of roofing contractors in the region that also handles solar panel installation, removal, and repair. When a skylight project requires shifting or temporarily removing panels, we take care of it as part of the same job. You won’t need to coordinate with a separate solar company or wait for another crew to clear the way.
We’re also a GAF Master Elite Roofing Contractor, a designation that reflects both training and demonstrated performance standards. When a skylight installation is paired with a GAF shingle roof replacement or repair, those shingles can be backed by a lifetime warranty, a 50-year Smart Choice Protection Period, and a 15-year wind warranty. Our team brings decades of combined roofing experience across residential and commercial properties of all sizes.
Skylights Across Every Roof Type
Skylight installation isn’t a one-size-fits-all project. The roof material, slope, and structure all shape how the work gets done, and our team works across tile, shingle, slate, metal, and flat roof systems. For flat roofs, including membrane and built-up construction, we handle the specific waterproofing requirements those surfaces demand. We serve both residential and commercial customers, from a single sun tunnel in a hallway to a series of fixed skylights across a commercial facility.
Skylight Types & Roof Fit
Choosing the right skylight starts with understanding what each type does and how your roof accommodates it:
- Fixed skylights are non-opening units designed purely for light. They’re the most common choice for rooms where ventilation isn’t a priority.
- Vented (operable) skylights open to allow airflow in addition to light. California building code requires these to be positioned a minimum distance from plumbing vents and environmental air vents.
- Tubular skylights (sun tunnels) channel daylight through a smaller roof opening and a reflective tube, making them a practical option for hallways, closets, or rooms where a full-size skylight isn’t feasible.
Roof slope affects mounting method. On pitches below 3:12, California building code requires the skylight to be mounted on a curb raised at least 4 inches above the roof surface, unless the manufacturer’s specifications state otherwise. Proper curb-mount and deck-mount flashing is critical at any pitch to help keep water out of the opening.
Permits & Energy Code Requirements in Long Beach
The City of Long Beach requires a building permit for skylight installation, processed through the Building and Safety Bureau. This applies to new installations, replacements, and most alterations that affect the roof structure, including tubular daylighting devices.
California’s building code also sets maximum U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) values for skylight glazing. The U-factor measures how well the unit insulates; the SHGC measures how much solar heat the glazing lets through. Replacement skylights and new installations each carry their own code thresholds, and selecting glazing that meets those thresholds is part of a code-compliant installation.
What the Installation Involves
Every skylight installation begins with an inspection of the proposed roof opening and the surrounding structure. We assess the framing, existing roofing material, and, when applicable, the location of any rooftop solar panels before any cuts are made. The skylight unit is then fitted, flashed, and sealed to integrate cleanly with the surrounding roof surface.
If your project involves a sudden leak from an existing skylight or storm damage to the framing around it, we offer emergency services for roofing problems that need immediate attention.
