IB PVC Cool Roof Recover at d'Arnaud Athletics / Futures Training Center in Long Beach

Finished IB Roof Systems 60-mil white PVC cool roof with reused skylights at d'Arnaud Athletics / Futures Training Center in Long Beach

In Long Beach, young athletes come to d'Arnaud Athletics to train like professionals. The elite baseball development and sports performance facility, now operating as part of Futures Training Center, works with players from about 9 to 18, along with college and professional athletes. Its training is built around data-driven tools from industry partners such as HitTrax, Trackman, Blast Motion and Rawlings. The program was co-founded by former Major League Baseball player Chase d'Arnaud, whose professional career earned him a strong following in the baseball community. He continues as an owner of the facility and of the Long Beach commercial building it occupies.

At a facility like this, the roof protects more than the building. It protects training sessions, sensitive hitting and pitching technology, and the schedules of athletes and families who count on the doors being open. When the time came for a new roof, ownership wanted a long-term commercial roofing solution with three goals: improve the building's energy efficiency, reduce ongoing maintenance, and prevent the business interruption that leaks and repeat repairs cause.

BYLTup's project manager recommended an IB Roof Systems PVC roof backed by a full manufacturer No-Dollar-Limit (NDL) warranty. The result is a Class A, 60-mil white PVC cool roof recover, permitted under Long Beach permit BRRF332063 and built to stay out of the way of the training happening below it.

Project Overview: Protecting an Elite Training Facility From the Top Down

The facility is a two-story commercial building in Long Beach's 90815 area. Its existing flat roof needed a lasting answer, not another round of patching. Underneath sits the kind of space that cannot be put on hold: batting cages, pitching lanes, strength and recovery areas, and the technology that measures every swing and throw.

Instead of a full tear-off, BYLTup designed a commercial roof recover. A new IB PVC system was installed over the existing roof, with fresh drainage, flashing and equipment detailing so the new membrane works as one warrantable system. A recover limits demolition and keeps the job focused on the weatherproofing details that matter most. For a Long Beach business owner, it is a practical way to add long-term protection without the disruption of a full replacement.

Key Project Highlights:

  • IB Roof Systems Class A 60-mil PVC membrane, installed as a cool roof recover over the existing roof
  • Reflective white membrane chosen for energy efficiency and cool roof performance
  • Mechanically attached system over 1/2-inch FanFold insulation board
  • Two-story commercial building in Long Beach, CA 90815
  • IB preformed vents and pipe jacks at roof penetrations
  • New 4-inch drip edge around the roof edge
  • New roof-to-wall and tucker flashings at transitions
  • Two new Josam 3-inch roof drains with overflows
  • Two new scupper drains to improve water management
  • New galvanized pan for a new HVAC unit
  • Existing skylights reused and integrated into the new roof system
  • IB Roof Systems 20-Year No-Dollar-Limit (NDL) Total Material & Labor System Warranty
  • Permitted with the City of Long Beach (permit BRRF332063)

Coordination Built Around an Active Training Facility

Athletes train on a schedule, and so did this project. The roofing work happened above an operating sports performance facility, so BYLTup sequenced the recover to protect the building envelope at every stage and to limit interruption to training below. Staging, material handling and daily clean-up were planned so that the roof, not the training floor, was the only place the work showed.

Detailing got as much attention as the open field of the roof. On flat commercial roofs, leaks usually start at drains, edges, wall transitions, skylights and mechanical equipment. That is where this project put its effort.

Step-by-Step Roofing Transformation

1. Preparing the Existing Roof for Recover

The crew prepared the existing roof surface to accept the new system, creating a clean, stable base for the recover assembly rather than layering over unresolved problems.

2. 1/2-Inch FanFold Insulation Board

A 1/2-inch FanFold layer was installed across the roof to separate the new membrane from the old surface and give the PVC a smooth, consistent substrate.

3. IB Class A 60-Mil White PVC, Mechanically Attached

The centerpiece is the IB Roof Systems 60-mil white single-ply PVC membrane, mechanically attached and heat-welded at the seams. IB PVC is known for strong welded seams, UV resistance and long-term durability. Its reflective white surface helps reduce heat gain into the building, which supports the owner's energy efficiency goal and makes for a more comfortable space for athletes training inside.

4. Drainage Upgrades: Josam Drains, Overflows and Scuppers

Ponding water is one of the main enemies of a flat roof. BYLTup installed two new Josam 3-inch drains with overflows and two new scupper drains to move water off the roof efficiently and add a backup path during heavy rain.

5. Edges, Walls and Penetrations

A new 4-inch drip edge, new roof-to-wall and tucker flashings, and IB preformed vents and pipe jacks tied every edge, wall and penetration into the membrane. These are the details that keep a commercial roof watertight for the long term.

6. HVAC Pan and Existing Skylights

A new galvanized pan was installed for a new HVAC unit, giving the mechanical equipment a clean, protected connection to the roof. The building's existing skylights were reused and carefully integrated into the new system, so the facility keeps its natural daylight without adding the cost of new skylights.

Finished Roof: Warranty, Efficiency and Fewer Interruptions

The finished roof is a bright white IB PVC field with clean detailing at every drain, scupper, wall and curb. It is a commercial flat roof built around how d'Arnaud Athletics and Futures Training Center actually operate. The IB Roof Systems 20-Year No-Dollar-Limit Total Material & Labor System Warranty gives ownership manufacturer-backed protection that does not cap repair costs. The reflective cool roof membrane supports energy efficiency over a busy, climate-sensitive training space. The upgraded drainage and flashing details are built to cut down on the leaks and repeat service calls that interrupt a business.
