She Has the Final Say: What to Ask Before a Roof Replacement

Construction worker and woman looking at clip board with construction plans both looking at ease

He found the company. You are going to vet it.

In a lot of homes, dad makes the first call and compares shingle brands and warranties, while mom asks the questions that actually decide it: Can I trust these people around my kids? How much will this disturb our week? Is this the right move for our family right now? A new roof is a big deal for the whole household, and you are usually the one thinking about the whole household. Here is what to ask, and how we answer it at BYLTup before you even have to.

1. Can I trust who is coming into my home?

This is the question to settle before you sign, not after the crew pulls up. Any contractor you are considering should be licensed, bonded, and insured, and willing to show proof when you ask. Find out whether the crews are their own employees or subcontractors, since that determines who is actually accountable for the work and who you are letting near your family. If some of their work is subcontracted, which is perfectly acceptable, are their subcontracted crews also fully licensed, insured and bonded? And look for an IB Roof System certification, or GAF Master Elite certification, which fewer than 2% of roofing companies in the country hold. BYLTup checks every one of these boxes. We have our own in-house crews, as well as several fully vetted and approved subcontractors who work with our teams regularly and meet our high standards and training. We are glad to share our credentials while you are still deciding and will provide you with a relevant certificate of insurance.

2. How much will this disrupt my family?

Your contractor should tell you up front approximately how long the job will take, when crews arrive, and when they wrap each day, and they should ask about your routine, not just their schedule. At BYLTup, we want to know if you work from home, if there are children in the home, if the kids get off the bus and come running through the yard at three. A crew that plans around your home and understands your day is a crew that stays out of your way.

3. Is it safe for my kids and pets?

Tear off creates debris and stray nails, so cleanup should be treated as part of the job, including magnetic sweeps of the yard and driveway. Your contractor should also walk you through where they park, stage materials, and place the port-a-potty and dump trailer. We do this on every job at BYLTup and include a preparation for re-roof document in every contract, so you always know which areas to keep little feet and paws clear of.

4. Will you protect my home and my yard?

Your landscaping, AC unit, patio, and windows sit right in the work zone, so a good contractor protects what surrounds and sits below the house, and cleans the site at the end of every day, not just at the finish. They should also warn you that tear off vibration can travel, so anything precious on interior walls can come down first. That heads up is standard practice for us.

5. Who keeps me informed?

This is the one too many contractors skip, and it matters most to the person who is home. You should have a real point of contact and clear updates throughout, so if a question comes up at noon while your partner is at work, you get an answer. At BYLTup, we talk to the whole household, not just the name on the contract. Every BYLTup project has a foreman on the job, managing the installation and repair work, a project manager who initially met with you, wrote your scope and contract and maintains a direct line of contact for you until your project is complete and a production manager who is the interface between our foreman, project manager and office, ensuring the job stays safe, on-time, and efficient at every step.

6. Will it look the way I want?

You will see this roof every single day, so your contractor should show you color and style options and photos of finished homes, and handle HOA or street matching before the first shingle goes on. If you are considering GAF shingles for example, their free Virtual Home Remodeler lets you upload a photo of your home and preview different shingle colors and styles right on your own roof, which makes it much easier to picture the result and share exactly what you want with your contractor. We make sure you can picture the result clearly, and love it, before we start.

7. Is this a smart move for us right now?

A trustworthy contractor gives you honest answers on how long the roof should last (a quality roof should last beyond 25 years if it was installed and maintained correctly), what the warranty covers, and how the project affects your home's value, with no pressure to decide on the spot. That is exactly how we operate at BYLTup. A good decision is one you make calmly, with everyone on the same page.

Ask us anything. Everyone in the house.

There is no such thing as too many questions on a project this big and this personal. The right roofing partner welcomes all of them, from the partner who made the first call and from the one giving the final yes.

At BYLTup, we built our whole approach around how these decisions actually get made: together. If you are just starting to research, or you were handed this by someone who already did, we would love to answer your questions. Call us at (562) 414-4425 or visit byltup.com. No pressure. Just real answers.
